Mini Course - SRV's Mary Had A Little Lamb Guitar Lesson - RiffNinja.com

Learn A Classic Electric Blues Tune
In Under An Hour

Stevie Ray Vaughan has influenced my own guitar playing to a massive degree. His high-energy electric blues took the world by storm, and the guitar scene has never been the same since.

When you first hear him play, and you hear the speed and intensity of his solos, you could be forgiven for thinking his playing is out of reach for the beginner or intermediate players. But in fact, if you dig in and break things down, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to find how much of it is quite doable for the dedicated student!

Mary Had A Little Lamb

You might not find Mary Had a Little Lamb on a top ten list, but in my opinion, it is a truly great electric blues song. If you've never heard it before, look it up on the internet. Buddy Guy did a fantastic version of the song as well. Together, these two versions influenced my own approach to the song. I just made a few little tweaks that my opinion, makes it a bit easier to play for the learning player.

It's a cheeky little blues tune that is tons of fun to play and perform!

Just One Hour To Add Richness And Fun To Your Guitar Journey

I put together a little course - it clocks in just under an hour - where we go through in detail all the licks you need to play the song. Please note the solo is not included.

The song starts off with a 24 bar intro that is all rhythm and riffs thrown together into a lovely mixture. That's really the heart of the song, and it's the part that we'll be focusing on. After that comes a couple 8 bar verses - I'll teach you the strumming and chords for that, but it won't take long. Then you can take a solo if you want, though we won't be getting into that here. To finish the song, we play the first 24 bars over again to wrap things up.

Tab is included on screen, to make things easy for you.

Through the song I'll show you how Stevie played different things, and I'll also teach you the way I do them, and explain why I made the small changes I did. I think you'll like the tweaks, but of course I'll give you the option!

A Classic Pentatonic Minor Blues

The song is a classic example of a 12 bar blues in E. The riffs come right out of the pentatonic minor scale, with some lovely blues notes thrown in for good measure. The riffs in this song can be easily applied to any other blues tunes - personally I get a kick out of adapting riffs from one song and squeezing them into another!

I should mention that Mary Had A Little Lamb is in Eb standard tuning - and as such, I've done this course in Eb too. You can easily tune your guitar the same way by dropping each string by a half step. If you wish, after you've learned the song, you can play it in standard tuning too.

Do You Feel Like It Takes Forever To
Actually Sound
Good On Guitar?

I've taught Mary Had A Little Lamb to hundreds - if not thousands - of my students over the years. They all love playing this song because it gives them something to play that sounds really cool.

If you're looking for a way to get a foothold in the blues - or if you already play some blues but you'd love to learn a new tune, then this mini-course is right up your alley!

This course is really designed for players of an intermediate level - if you're a straight up beginner and you want to learn the blues, I'd recommend starting with my Electric Blues For Beginners course instead.
